It waited till the very end, but 2004 ULEB Cup champion Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem punched its ticket to the elimination rounds with a home-court win over Alba Berlin in the teams' regular season finale. Now it knows that anything is possible and the reds from the Israeli capital hope to be making their second trip to Charleroi this April. Hapoel has had an up-and-down season so far. On the one hand, Jerusalem was the only team to beat Group C winner Montepaschi Siena – and it did so twice. But the team also lost twice to last-placed finisher Telindus Oostende. Hapoel didn't have the start to the season that it had hoped for, losing games at Khimki and Lukoil Academic in which it held comfortable second-half leads and then dropping a home decision to Oostende for a 1-3 mark. Big road wins at Siena and Berlin were followed by a convincing home win over Academic, putting the team 4-4 and in control of its destiny in the tough group. However, an unexpected defeat at Oostende set up the hard-fought finale against Alba, where coach Dan Shamir's men, led by captain Meir Tapiro and sparkplug point guard Dror Hagag, rode their fans support to claim a spot in the elimination rounds. Reasons for optimism in Jerusalem include the strong play of recently signed big man Terrence Morris, who helps balance 2006 ULEB Cup regular season MVP Mario Austin and Jurica Golemac on the team's frontline. Furthermore, swingman Matan Naor is recovering from a shoulder injury and could return to action soon. Experience also works in the team's favor, as a number of players return from last year's squad that marched to the semifinals before falling short against eventual winner Dynamo Moscow. With Naor back and everyone else healthy, plus the passionate support of Hapoel fans giving the team a push at the Malha Arena, going one step further than last season is not out of the question for this team.
